“Books that refuse to play by the rules of mass communication suffer the curse of becoming arts and crafts.”
Theodor Adorno, “Bibliographic Musings”
Printing, publishing, & book art projects by me* & in collaboration (all publishing, even “self”-publishing is in some way collaborative, as, I guess, is everything we do…) and things I’d rather not bother categorizing, things that resist being categorized. NOTA is an exhaustion with being made to fit into one category or another, objects tired of being objectified, slithering off around the back of the building to smoke a cigarette in the dark (don’t worry, most books don’t have lungs & don’t need to worry about getting lung cancer). It is a genre/gender feeling. The book is the body of the text. I would like to explore some possibilities.
How is the container a living thing. A small, weird world we are creating. Containers without walls, constraints without boundaries. Publishing as an art project .
“For a long time, a book has looked like a book — boring.”
Innovative Bookbinding: Secret Compartments & Hidden Messages by Shereen LaPlantz
Each book an individual object with its own soul. Not just the text but something unique. The life of the object, exchanging material with the reader, becoming an individual.
Is the book design in service of the writer or the reader? or the book itself?
What is speculative publishing
I am not in any hurry. We’re all getting there eventually.
“I must make a concerted effort to remove myself from single-sheet mentality.”
Keith A. Smith, Non-Adhesive Binding (vol 1)
